Qiu Ru's Reflection
Throughout this approximate 1.5 weeks study mission, I’ve not only widened my knowledge on business practices, business culture and also cultural aspects of the Chinese in China and Hong Kong. It really proved to me how different the Chinese form different countries can be.
Firstly, the company visits had managed to reinforce my finding on my research topics. For example, the reasons why companies choose to invest in the PRD region. Besides that the company visits have also given me information beyond what can be found through researches. Especially during the Q&A sessions, we got to know about the different perceptions of the different guests speakers regarding similar issues. For example, most investors would think that the PRD region is worth investing, however, to Mr Raymond Choi, he felt that the PRD region’s market is already too saturated with the influx of investors. These experiences that businessmen have is much more convincing that facts.
This study trip has also helped me realize the effects of growth of the PRD region on the other countries especially Hong Kong. Hong Kong and China’s relationship are just like the left and right hands of a person, complementing each other in the business world. Hong Kong’s good logistics infrastructure aids China while the booming China also helps increase the demand for Hong Kong’s logistics services.
This trip has also helped me us widen my social circle. Through the business networking dinners and company visits, I’ve also managed to get to know more investors in the PRD region. Exchanging of namecards have also seemed to become a routine during the trip and we are getting better at it too. The importance of networking to the future working life was also highlighted to me on this trip. It is really an important key to business success.
On top of the business aspects experiences I gained. I also experienced the different cultures of Chinese in different countries. It was through this trip that I realized how bad it was for us to be speaking Singlish. It became so hard for me to speak pure English or Chinese. It was just too rooted into to mind. For example, daily speeches have also seemed to be so difficult and I just seem to be unable to get accustomed to the difference. Without this trip, I guess till now I still won’t be able to realize how hard it is to adapt to another culture.
This trip though tough, still has its little enjoyments occasionally. Most importantly, I managed to fulfill most of my pre-trip goals and I had also realized how important it is for us to observe as it is essential for such learning journeys.
